Pruning Jasmine Vines: How To Control Asian Jasmine Plants

Pruning Jasmine Vines: How To Control Asian Jasmine Plants

By: Teo Spengler

Look before you leap when it comes to planting Asian jasmine vines. You may be attracted by the plant’s small, dark-green leaves and pretty white flowers, or its reputation as an easy ground cover. However, once you lose control of jasmine, keeping it where you want it can be difficult. Read on for more information about how to control Asian jasmine.

Information about Asian Jasmine

Asian jasmine (Trachelospermum asiaticum) grows in the wild in Korea and Japan, and it is used as ground cover in this country. It covers your backyard or the wall of your garage rapidly, and survives cooler weather better than many other jasmines.

Asian jasmine is planted by homeowners as a quick, low-cost ground cover. The trick to Asiatic jasmine control is to act early to set boundaries for it. Decide where you want the plant, and chop it down whenever it moves out of this range.

How to Control Asian Jasmine

If you plant Asian jasmine in your yard, mow the shrub religiously. Calendar periodic mowing appointments and never, ever skip them. It is easy to lose control of jasmine plants.

Whenever a branch of this plant touches the soil, that piece sprouts roots. If you allow it to take over your yard, it can be virtually impossible to eradicate.

Pruning jasmine vines will work, over time, to reduce the strength of Asian jasmine. Prune the stems ruthlessly right to the ground, or mow them at ground level to get rid of all leaves and stems. This may discourage it since it needs foliage to manufacture its food.

The problem with Asian jasmine is that killing the stems and leaves – whether by pruning jasmine vines or by spraying them with herbicide – does not kill the roots. So control of Asian jasmine involves preventing the roots from traveling far afield.

Pulling out the plant with as many roots as possible is more effective than pruning jasmine vines. It may enable you to take control of jasmine that has overrun your yard. However, this requires a lot of time and effort on your part.

Asiatic Jasmine Control with Herbicides

If your jasmine vine is near or tangled up with other desirable shrubs, using herbicides may not be a productive idea. No herbicide eliminates the one without also killing the other. You’ll need to use a shielded spray and go slowly.

You can try painting the foliage of the Asian jasmine with herbicide. However, remember that killing the above-ground portion of this vine does not kill the roots.

How to Eliminate Weeds in Asian Jasmine

The lush green carpet of foliage created by the Asian jasmine (Trachelospermum asiaticum) makes it a popular turf grass alternative. Masses of jasmine look and grow their best without competition from weeds. Eliminate weeds by hand-pulling or the spraying of a glyphosate-based herbicide. Prevent an out of control situation by establishing the jasmine with the weed-retarding use of mulch and pre-emergent herbicides and growing healthy jasmine plants.

Use weed control to rescue Asiatic jasmine

Q. I planted Asiatic jasmine to become a ground cover, but with the rains, weeds are also growing among the plants. Is there a weed-control product to use with this planting?

A. A mixture of jasmine and weeds does form a ground cover, but the conglomerate may not have the most desirable look. You can regain the pure jasmine planting with the help of a few weed-control products. Several selective herbicides are marketed for grassy weed control among the growing jasmine and include Fertilome Over The Top II Grass Killer and Ortho Grass-B-Gon Garden Grass Killer. Follow the labels for safe and effective control.

Regretfully, there are no selective controls for broadleaf weeds. These must be hand-pulled, dug out or spot-killed with a product like Roundup, making sure not to hit the jasmine.

Once the weeds are removed, a pre-emergence herbicide can be applied to established Asiatic jasmine plantings. This normally means the plants have to be well-rooted in the ground and making new growth. Such products are sold as weed preventers, including the Miracle-Gro Garden Weed Preventer and Preen Weed Preventer found at local garden centers. A pre-emergence herbicide can prevent grass and broadleaf weed seeds from germinating but does not control growing weeds. Follow the label carefully.

Q. I planted squash and eggplant, which produced flowers that dropped off without developing fruits. What is the problem?

A. Many gardeners are reporting similar results with their vegetables and it is all due to the heat. Summer is not a good time to be fruiting most squash, eggplants, tomatoes and many types of peppers. Usually the hot weather prevents good fruit set and the heat plus humidity causes rot problems. You may still get a few fruits, but they are often not as tasty, as crops harvested during the better growing months. Next planting time for these crops is mid-August so the plants can grow and start fruiting during the drier and a bit cooler fall months.

Q. I could not cut my lawn because of the rains and it grew very tall. When it was cut it turned yellow. Did I ruin the lawn and how can I help it grow back?

A. When the grass grows so tall the next mowing makes it looks like it has been scalped. The result is sun-damaged grass that can take on a yellow to brown look. Luckily most turf types are very resilient and can grow back. Give the heavily mowed grass normal care and when you start to see green shoots, apply a light application of a lawn fertilizer. Also keep the grass moist when the rains are not adequate. Keeping an attractive lawn may mean mowing it more often during the summer to stay ahead of the weather.

Q. I like the looks of coleus with the many leaf colors. Can they grow in both sun and shade and what happens when the weather turns cold?

A. Coleus are the clowns of the landscape, often mixing a pleasing blend of colors in every leaf. They grow well during the warmer weather but are not going to like the cold. When temperatures hit freezing or below, coleus top portions are damaged and many are killed back to the ground. Some plants protected by mulch may regrow from buds near the soil line, but the recovery is slow.

Coleus was once a shade-to-filtered-sun-only plant, but modern varieties often grow over a wide range of light levels including full sun. Some varieties still bleach-out or develop burned leaf portions during the summer, so you might check with the garden center to make sure your selection can take the higher light levels if you are planning a sunny garden display.

Q. A watermelon vine growing from our compost pile recently produced fruits. How do we know when they are ripe?

A. Rapping and listening for a dull, thud-like echo is used by some to pick a red-to-the-rind melon, but others want even more proof. So, if you are still not quite sure, check the belly of the melon. Ripening watermelons change from smooth and white to rough and yellow. Also, the string-like tendril on the stem nearest the melon turns brown as a final hint it's harvest time.

Q. The mulch beneath our roses and gardenias has developed clusters of what appears to be small cup-like shells. What is growing in the mulch and should it be removed?

A. Gardens are full of curiosities, and in this case your mulch layer is hosting a bird's-nest fungus. This is a saprophyte that obtains moisture and nutrients from the decaying wood, twigs, and other bits of organic matter. The clusters of cup-like structures contain what appears to be eggs but are actually the spore capsules. They eventually pop open to release the spores that restart fungal colonies.

The bird's-nest fungus is harmless and can usually be ignored. Should it become so thick that water movement into the ground is affected, it can be loosened with a rake to disturb the fungal growth.

Asiatic Jasmine 'Minima' Groundcover

“Asiatic jasmine is an evergreen, vine-like woody plant that is commonly used in Florida landscapes due to its hardiness and drought tolerance. Native to Japan and Korea, Trachelospermum asiaticum is a low maintenance groundcover that is great for mass plantings and turfgrass alternatives. It’s an ideal plant for people who want an attractive garden without all the hard work. In shady areas, it also provides needed texture and variation.

Once established, Asiatic jasmine requires very little maintenance to keep it looking nice. Most people use this groundcover where turfgrass won’t grow, as Asiatic jasmine will tolerate many growing conditions and suppresses weed growth.

Asiatic jasmine requires little mowing, but edges should be trimmed occasionally. It should be used in low traffic areas, as it doesn't withstand foot traffic well. This plant is easier to control when neglected. Too much water, sun, or fertilizer can make it aggressive and unruly.

Asiatic jasmine is salt tolerant and can be grown in coastal areas. This versatile plant can even be grown in containers and hanging baskets.”

In Newly Planted Beds

Clean the soil of weeds and their taproots in the planting area. It is particularly important to remove perennial weeds that have sprawling root systems before you plant Asian jasmine.

Plant young plugs of Asian jasmine in the bed, spacing them as desired to facilitate the growth of a carpet-like groundcover.

  • The lush green carpet of foliage created by the Asian jasmine (Trachelospermum asiaticum) makes it a popular turf grass alternative.
  • Prevent an out of control situation by establishing the jasmine with the weed-retarding use of mulch and pre-emergent herbicides and growing healthy jasmine plants.

Broadcast pre-emergent herbicide granules, according to product label instructions, across the newly planted area. Wear gloves while handling the granules.

Lay a 3- to 4-inch layer of organic mulch atop the soil and granules across the planting area. Try to keep mulch from clumping on the base of the individual Asian Jasmine plants, ideally pull mulch away 2 to 3 inches from the base of each plant.

Water the planting bed thoroughly to moisten the soil for the new transplants and to activate the pre-emergent herbicide.

Monitor the planting area for the next 6 months, quickly pulling or digging out any perennial weeds that sprout. The pre-emergent herbicide only prohibits the sprouting of weed seeds, not sprouts from roots.

  • Broadcast pre-emergent herbicide granules, according to product label instructions, across the newly planted area.

Refrain from using any herbicides on newly planting Asian jasmine until they are well-established, usually after 12 months. Healthy plants with good root systems will be better able to handle occasional topical herbicide sprays in the future if needed.

Replenish organic mulch as needed to maintain a layer 3 to 4-inches thick atop the soil and around the plants. Depending on climate, the mulch application may be needed once or twice per year, in spring or fall, before weeds typically germinate or sprout from dormant roots.

Snow-in-Summer Asiatic Jasmine

A cultivar of Asiatic jasmine is called Snow-in-Summer (Trachelospermum Asiaticum ‘hosns’). Its leaves start out pink, turn white, and end up as a variegated pink and white version of the ground cover. Its abundant creamy yellow flowers emit a pleasing fragrance while adding color to your garden. With the characteristics of traditional Asian jasmine, snow-in-summer Asian jasmine is deer resistant and rarely contracts diseases common to other plants. The growth rate of snow-in-summer Asiatic jasmine is moderate, according to Monrovia, the nursery that first cultivated and trademarked the plant. Monrovia suggests planting the cultivar in a warm climate to take advantage of its long blossoming season.

The Best Way to Remove Jasmine Ground Cover

Asiatic jasmine ground cover (Trachelospermum asiaticum) grows in a thick shallow-rooted mat. It is a good ground cover for dense shade and lives in moist soil as well as sunny, dry slopes. It is hardy in USDA horticultural zones 7-11, where it is evergreen or semi-evergreen. Asian jasmine can be kept neat by cutting back in late winter with a lawnmower at the highest setting to three inches from the ground. Occasionally, Asiatic jasmine may become invasive and need to be removed. Thoroughly water the area where the jasmine is growing the day before removal.

Put on a pair of garden gloves and separate the area where the Asiatic jasmine is planted into several sections by mentally marking them off. You do not need to be exact. Depending on how large the area is, a three foot by three foot section is easy to work with to start. Keep in mind that Asiatic jasmine is very shallow rooted and easy to remove once the roots are loosened.

  • Asiatic jasmine ground cover (Trachelospermum asiaticum) grows in a thick shallow-rooted mat.
  • Keep in mind that Asiatic jasmine is very shallow rooted and easy to remove once the roots are loosened.

Push the shovel into the ground around the first section. Work the shovel back and forth as you cut the roots and plants away from the rest of the planting. Loosen the first section from the ground by pushing the shovel just under the section you are removing just enough to loosen the roots but not cut them. The roots need to be intact so the plant cannot reestablish itself after it is pulled.

Pull the first section of Asiatic jasmine from the ground by grabbing it by the plant tops and pulling it towards you. Shake the excess dirt from the ground cover then dispose of the plant. Repeat this procedure on all sections until the jasmine has been completely removed.

  • Push the shovel into the ground around the first section.
  • Pull the first section of Asiatic jasmine from the ground by grabbing it by the plant tops and pulling it towards you.

Rake the bare area with a dirt rake and pick out any roots or pieces of Asiatic jasmine ground cover that are left in the soil. Smooth the soil with a leaf rake to remove any other pieces. Remove any new sprouts by hand that may come up later in the season.

Try not to step on the area where the ground cover was just removed as you remove each section because you may bury roots that were accidentally severed when you removed the previous section.

Trying to kill Asiatic jasmine with a weed killer such as glyphosate is difficult because the leaves have a waxy coating that repels liquids. Hand removal is by far the easiest and fastest way to remove Asiatic jasmine ground cover.
